Five Minutes With Pixelord

Five Minutes With Pixelord

A phot of Russian producer Pixelord on the decks.

Pixelord – known in real life as Alexey Devyanin – is one of the most exciting and prolific producers making electronic music in Russia. Known for blending immaculate sounds with 8-bit sensibility and powerful beats, he released his first LP ‘Places’ on his own label Hyperboloid Records earlier this year (and it’s brilliant). We spoke to Alexey about his influences, the perfect nightclub and the emotions of making music. Enjoy and spread the word!

How would you describe the music that you make in one sentence?

I make futuristic electronic music for crazy and curious people, clubs and home listening.

What are your three biggest non-musical influences?

Love, nature, games.

You can take five records with you on a desert island. Which ones?

Aphex Twin – Saw2, any ISAN album, some Queen album to not forget words, my own album, and some 8bit music I guess, because I don’t want to forget how sweet it sounds.

If you had to lose one of your senses, which one would it be and why?

I would choose fear, thats something that stops everyone, I think doesn’t help a lot, but sometimes yes. Anyway losing fear has more advantages than losing anything else.

What makes a perfect music venue/nightclub?

Everything is important, the location, the music, people, how rooms are organized, if there’s a tables or not, the lighting. I’m very picky at this point, I don’t like clubs in general, but some are really fun and comfortable to stay and play in.

What’s the best piece of music that you’ve ever made?

For me my best music is always the recent, now its Places LP but next time or next year I’ll make something better.

If you could only say one word for the rest of your life, in any language, what would it be and what does it mean?

I would say my name all the time 😉 at least I could let people know who I am.

What advice would you give your ten-year-old self (musical or not)?

I would advise to move more, take some physical exercise and be more strong, be resolute.

What is the strongest emotion for making music?

It’s curiosity, it’s also passion to create something that doesn’t exist, exploration. and sometimes it’s happiness but not always, mainly music doesn’t come from happy state. I mean when a person is happy and calm, he would rather go for a walk, meet friends, have fun and make love. But when he is worried or depressed, when he is searching for something, some answers maybe, then he would start making music or painting, or making songs and writing books, movies.

If you were interviewing yourself, what other question would you ask (and what’s the answer?)?

I would ask something about my childhood, something that I can’t remember today, when I was too young to remember. Maybe there would be answer someday?

What is your local underground music scene like? What three artists do we need to check out?

It’s pretty cool now, making progress. Lots of new labels opens, new artists and parties every weekend. I think it’s better than anytime before in electronic music scene in Russia now. You should check out 813, Gillepsy, Yayati.

Big thanks to Alexey for taking the time to answer our weird and wonderful questions. You can find out all about Pixelord by visiting his website, liking him on Facebook, chatting to him on Twitter or simply plugging in the biggest speakers you own and listening to mountains of his music on Soundcloud.
