Five Minutes With Nuage
Russian producer Nuage is next in our ‘Five Minutes With’ interview series. Nuage makes beautifully melodic electronic music with a 90s twist. Head over to his Soundcloud page and have a listen to his back catalogue and stop by his Facebook page to keep up to date with his upcoming releases. Here’s what he had to say when faced with our motley set of questions…
How would you describe the music that you make in one sentence?
It’s different sounds, in that I’m trying to create a warm vibe, it’s music for the ears at first and then the body. It’s thinking music.
What are your three biggest non-musical influences?
I’m inspired by night, different places and new people.
You can take five records with you on a desert island. Which ones?
Black Sabbath – Planet Caravan – I love the atmosphere of this song.
Goldie – Inner City Life – I can’t leave it because it’s my roots.
I really like that Bonobo track called Stay The Same – Defo will play it on repeat..
hmmm.. also..Apparat – Song Of Los
If you had to lose one of your senses, which one would it be and why?
I think it is … ability to speak – a lot of words is never going to benefit, and silence is sometimes the most priceless way, so you can be silent and maybe you can hear something new around you.
What makes a perfect music venue/nightclub?
Positive people, atmospheric space, nice and clean sound and no f***king smoke. Here in Russia the law doesn’t cover smoking in public places, so many clubs – the smoker’s paradise – I really hate it.. oh yeah, endless alcohol for the dj 😀
What’s the best piece of music that you’ve ever made?
Many listeners are still following my drum n bass so I’ll remind them of this record:
Nuage – Missing You (Med School Music)
Of course my favourite track from the Music of Branches LP released in march 2013:
Nuage – Eversky (Absys Records)
If you could only say one word for the rest of your life, in any language, what would it be and what does it mean?
I would like to say “I love you” to my ppl, and to yourself.. “just be yourself”.
What advice would you give your ten-year-old self (musical or not)?
Learn independence..and start to collect money for the new computer and synth!
What is the strongest emotion for making music?
Sometimes you’re sitting in the studio, sitting and thinking nothing, feeling nothing, then you finish writing a track, and then someone says to you “man this is an incredible thing, I feel exactly what you wanted to say, it’s defo emotional !!” well.. and you agree and nod your head, but inside you know that it’s nothing… no context.. you just sat down and just wrote it and didn’t know how it happened. Emotions, they are inside – you can not control them or explain..so the best things happen in the moment and without any control.
If you were interviewing yourself, what other question would you ask (and what’s the answer?)?
Why do you need music? Yes, It drives me crazy, but at the same time helps me to live and feel. Everything changes, and the music remains, it’s just here now. It should be appreciated.
What is your local underground music scene like? What three artists do we need to check out?
Thanks very much to Nuage for taking the time to answer our questions!
