Ekva is a talented and creative producer/DJ hailing from Tallinn in Estonia. We caught up with him in our latest in the series of “Five Minutes With” interviews to find out his sources of inspiration and what makes him tick…
First things first – What’s your name and where are you from?
Jan Tali aka Ekva from Tallinn, Estonia.
How would you describe the music that you make in one sentence?
I make music I like.
What are your three biggest non-musical influences?
Beautiful women, high quality contemporary visual art & good design in general.
You can take five records with you on a desert island. Which ones?
I would have to make those 5 records then – compress as much good music on the media as possible.
If you had to lose one of your senses, which one would it be and why?
Taste – gustatory perception, I value more the info gathered from other senses plus I need them for work.
What makes a perfect music venue/nightclub?
Most of all, as always, it is down to people but asides from that – a good soundsystem which is
maintained / tuned all the time. The music has to be of high sound quality and sublime in other
aspects aswell. Also it would be nice to have a good ventilation system (fresh air), a bar with good
selection and not over the top prices, professional staff and beautiful people.
What’s the best piece of music that you’ve ever made?
The best is yet to come, but for now I would promote this piece:
Ekva – Kosmos
If you could only say one word for the rest of your life, in any language, what would it be and what does it mean?
Hea – means good in Estonian.
What advice would you give your ten-year-old self (musical or not)?
Work hard towards your dreams, do not set limits on what you are capable of – everything is possible.
What is the strongest emotion for making music?
If you were interviewing yourself, what other question would you ask (and what’s the answer?)?
Yes or no? Of course.
For anyone who doesn’t know too much about the Estonian underground scene, who would you recomment they check out?
There is quite a scene in Estonia, lots of genres represented, parties everywhere. I would prefer more quality. Check out the following artists…
Make sure you check out Ekva’s music over on his Soundcloud page.
